I came to Goddard vets about a month ago because my bird had a swollen foot and I thought it was because of the metal ring on the foot. As soon as the vet saw it, she said this is bumblefoot yet still proceeded to take the bird for an assessment where we waited more than 40mins for her to say again that it’s bumblefoot. I was charged the full emergency hours consultation price of £150 as it was a Saturday plus the treatment costs – so I paid almost £200. I gave my bird the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicine and he didn’t improve but in fact the foot swelling became worse.
Fast forward a few weeks when I managed to see a bird specialist, they said that they have never seen bumblefoot come to birds under 1 year of age (my bird was 11 weeks old when he was seen by Goddard) and that this swelling is most likely the result of a fracture in the joints between the toes and foot. Because of this incorrect diagnosis by the Goddard vet, my bird was in a lot of pain, taking unnecessary medicine and his condition worsened, which wasted a lot of time as he could’ve gotten better quickly with the correct diagnosis.
I have had to give him away to a rescue because the cost of the treatments and x-ray was estimated to be very high due to an escalation of his condition. Within two days of being seen by a specialist from the rescue, they have confirmed that he NEVER HAD bumblefoot, but it was a fractured foot and his swelling went down very quickly because he is taking the correct medication. But unfortunately, I have lost my bird as I had to give him away.
I appreciate that the Goddard vet wanted to help and booked a same day appointment but if you are not a bird specialist then 1) don’t list on your website/Google that you can take exotics because that is harmful, dishonest and I wouldn’t have even registered with the branch and travelled this far if their vets don’t see/not too familiar with exotics. 2) You could have refused to proceed with the assessment once you realised that the issue is not with the metal ring on his foot instead of incorrectly diagnosing him and I would've appreciated your honesty. Happy to be contacted for further investigation if needed.
