Quail Fact Friday!đź’ˇ Late summer is a crucial time for bobwhite quail broods! This season marks the transition for young quail as they mature, perfecting their flight skills and preparing for the cooler months ahead. During this time, quail rely heavily on insects for protein, which is essential for their rapid growth and feather development. In fact, research shows that quail chicks depend on insects during their first few weeks of life, as the high protein content supports muscle development and helps them gain strength for flying. Without a steady supply of bugs, chicks may struggle to survive or grow as quickly as they need to before the fall shuffle. This is why diverse habitat that includes a variety of grasses and forbs is so critical for quail. #quailforever #quail #bobwhite #bobwhitequail #quailfactfriday

Listen now at the link below, or wherever you get your podcasts. https://quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Quail-Forever/Podcast-Ep-281-The-Prairie-Grouse-Forecast,-Hunting-Tips,-and-a-Game-of-Battleship.aspx Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Pheasants Forever Editor Tom Carpenter and Quail Forever Editor Ryan Sparks for a conversation with professional dog trainer Clyde Vetter, who also happens to be husband to PF & QF President and Chief Executive Officer Marilyn Vetter. Each member of this conversation also considers themselves prairie grouse hunting junkies, so they provide a forecast for the 2024 sharp-tailed grouse and greater prairie chicken hunting season and weave their hunting tips into a game of Prairie Grouse Battleship. Episode Highlights: - The group plays four rounds of “Prairie Grouse Battleship” in which each participant provides a fresh hunting tip for sharpies and/or chickens in hopes of scoring points for tips the other competitors don’t have on their lists. - This episode marks the introduction of the brand new “Premium Moments in the Field” stories from Grain Belt Beer Premium, “The Pheasant Friendly Beer.” - Check out the state-by-state prairie grouse hunting forecast at PheasantsForever.org/Primer presented by Sportsman's Guide.

Last month, Quail Forever team members, alongside volunteers and numerous partners, executed a prescribed fire on nearly 1,000 acres outside Spearman, Texas. Located on the northern edge of the Texas Panhandle, the property is owned by the Palo Duro Water Authority. The burn will boost the long-term health of wildlife habitat on the property, which is home to numerous upland, big game and non-game species — including pheasants, bobwhite quail, scaled quail, whitetail deer and mule deer. Just as important, the burn also helps mitigate wildfire risk for the future in an area of the country that was recently impacted by historic fires. Learn more about this burn and the benefits of prescribed fire at the link below. https://quailforever.org/BlogLanding/Blogs/Quail-Forever/The-Habitat-Organization-and-Partners-Execute-Large-Prescribed-Burn-in-Texas.aspx
