As quail seasons really start to kick in, so does our work on the winter edition of Quail Forever Journal. Our cover displays a distinct QF flair: Tikka, QF social media strategist Nate Akey’s (@nathanielakey) GSP, returns a gorgeous mountain quail to hand in Oregon last year on a mixed bag hunt with onX. That story, filled with more spectacular pictures from our own Aaron Black-Schmidt (@blackschmidt), leads the features for this issue. We also visit New Mexico, Oklahoma and legendary trainer Delmar Smith, and check in on QF initiatives in Missouri and Louisiana, throwing Kansas and Arkansas into the mix as well. Make sure you are signed up or renewed by November 30 to be on the mailing list for the winter Issue of QF Journal and get in on the adventures. "Ignited by heartache we cast off, the dogs and I. Jettisoning all but what could fit in a camper, I sold the house and quit my job. The only place I wanted to see the world I knew was in the rearview. Spending September and October in Montana and the Dakotas, we rolled back west in November to Oregon with a plan to close the season via a big loop through Nebraska and Kansas, then New Mexico and Arizona starting in January. Short of the general route, I set no expectations or plans greater than to hunt as many days as possible, hopeful somewhere in all those miles the darkness and self-recrimination would lift." "Shortly after hunting season had ended on a windswept, cold day on the western prairie of Nebraska, I took a moment by the fireplace to reflect and inventory the year. As I reflected, I couldn’t help but imagine how powerful it would be if we could bottle up these memories and share them with the world. My conviction about the importance of defining moments in nature is why I am so passionate about connecting others to hunting and conservation. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s Learn to Hunt (LTH) program has been very successful at helping people have positive and memorable experiences outdoors. But the barriers of time and capacity limit these physical events. How could we overcome this obstacle? So, over the past two years, PF & QF have gathered some of the most well-respected organizations in the hunting and conservation community to tackle the journey of building a cutting-edge and inspirational how-to-hunt resource together. Introducing How to Hunt Upland Birds." "Much of North America’s landscape has a historical relationship with fire, one that predates modern times and even European settlement of the continent. Fires played a role in shaping plant communities and wildlife habitat from one ocean to the other. Fires kept prairies relatively free of woody species and allowed wildflowers and grasses to thrive in woodlands. Over hundreds and thousands of years, plants and animals adapted to fire regimes where fires during the fall season were common occurrences (a site would have burned every 3 to 6 years on average). Seasonality and typically mild burn intensities fostered widespread and highly diverse plant and wildlife communities."
