"Much of North America’s landscape has a historical relationship with fire, one that predates modern times and even European settlement of the continent. Fires played a role in shaping plant communities and wildlife habitat from one ocean to the other. Fires kept prairies relatively free of woody species and allowed wildflowers and grasses to thrive in woodlands. Over hundreds and thousands of years, plants and animals adapted to fire regimes where fires during the fall season were common occurrences (a site would have burned every 3 to 6 years on average). Seasonality and typically mild burn intensities fostered widespread and highly diverse plant and wildlife communities." On The Wing Podcast Ep. 236: Upland Hunting Outlook for the Western United States, is live. Link in bio to listen now, or wherever you download your podcasts. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Quail Forever’s Program Manager Andy Edwards for a conversation focused on guests Casey Cardinal, resident game bird biologist for the New Mexico Game & Fish Department and chair of the Western Quail Working Group, and Lauren Stamm, Quail Forever’s regional representative for the southwestern U.S. The group provides an upland bird hunting forecast covering quail species across the western states starting in the southwest desert up to the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Episode Highlights: - Cardinal gets the conversation started by targeting scaled quail in west Texas and rolls across New Mexico and Arizona with positive prospects for bobwhite, Gambel’s, and Montezuma quail. - Stamm covers Nevada and California for valley quail, Gambel’s quail, and chukar. Cardinal closes the conversation with a wide array of hunting forecasts for valley quail, mountain quail, sharp-tail grouse, dusky grouse, and chukars across the Pacific Northwest. - Edwards and St.Pierre add their perspectives as Midwest-based bird hunters traveling to the West where rattlesnakes, mountain cliffs, and cactus are intimidating factors for the first-timers. #quailforever #pheasantsforever #onthewingpodcast

Earlier this month, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever President and CEO Marilyn Vetter was honored by her alma mater, the University of North Dakota (UND). Vetter received the prestigious Sioux Award for distinguished achievement and leadership, the highest award given by the UND alumni association. “UND taught me it’s okay to have a path, but that you can take the fork in the road as well,” said Vetter. “The confidence I gained at North Dakota has meant so much to me throughout my career, and eventually lead me to my current position at Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever. I’m incredibly proud to receive this award, and to be an alumni of the University of North Dakota.” To read the whole story head to the link below.
Quail Forever is proud to announce three new local chapters spread out across the bobwhite’s historic range: The Coastal Virginia Chapter, The East Central Indiana Chapter, & The Chattooga Georgia Chapter. In each chapter, new ranks of volunteers will provide a welcomed boost to habitat conservation work, hunter recruitment and advocacy efforts in their respective communities. Learn more about these new QF chapters at the link below. Unique among national conservation organizations, the new chapters of Quail Forever will retain 100 percent decision-making control over their locally raised funds. Under this model, volunteers can develop wildlife habitat projects and conduct conservation education events in their region, while belonging to a national organization with a voice regarding state and federal conservation policy.
