Short and sweet version:
From booking through final return to the airport, Happy Campers made our Iceland vacation spectacular. Our vehicle was great and handled very poor road conditions very well, which was a massive relief given the situation. Camping was a new experience for us, and the convenience given to us by a camper van and Happy Campers themselves made for a great vacation.
Longer version:
Booking:
Booking with Happy Campers was pretty easy. Their site was smooth, helped us compare our options and ensure we got everything we needed for our vacation.
Arrival:
Arriving in Iceland, we were shuttled to Happy Campers from the airport by the staff. Everybody involved in the arrival process was great and friendly. At check-in, we went through our order and we got back a few euros from some overlap in the bundle we selected and add-on items we had selected, as well. This detail could’ve been easily overlooked by somebody, so we appreciate getting that back!
Helena, who we were handed off to, was superb! She got us everything we booked, walked us through how to use the tablet hotspot (a must! Having internet from the van is superbly useful!), the vehicle, road laws and the vehicle functions. She was really detailed and answered all of our questions. Additionally, she went above and beyond to ensure everything we ordered was working as expected, even replacing a partially empty fuel canister, which ensured we didn’t have to try to find a new canister in a foreign country! This set us up for a very easy slide into vacation mode, allowing us to focus on what’s important: the experience!
Vehicle:
We got a VW Transporter, a large 4x4 van. You’ll find that 4x4 is required for a good amount of Iceland’s roads. Ultimately the extra cost of the type of van we booked was well, well worth it. We encountered inclimate weather that shut down much of Route 1 while on our vacation, and we never felt unsafe in the vehicle! We drove through ice/snow with more ease than I would have anticipated, and it made our ability to handle a wrench thrown into our vacation with ease.
We did encounter a few issues with the vehicle. On our first morning I noticed our tire was practically flat, and measured in at 15psi when the tire should have been at 80psi. After filling at the gas station, it did hold pressure after that. Additionally, the vehicle reported that it had too much oil, which didn’t impact our trip. We were able to use the chat feature of the tablet, which gave us a direct line with Happy Campers about these issues, which was super handy!
One thing to note about Iceland is that the fuel is really expensive, at least compared to American standards. Our fuel cost ended up being $350 for 7 days for the entirety of the ring road. With the road conditions we encountered, I feel the fuel inefficiency was worth it, in the end.
Accommodations:
The interior of the van was better than I had expected upon arrival. The bed folded out to be a good sized bed, perhaps a double, and I actually fit on it, as a 6’3” individual! We slept like babies! Additionally, Happy Campers provided us with all the bedding we needed, which was really nice on a very cold week in Iceland.
A minor inconvenience was the shelving, which could be a pain to get in and out of the shelving unit. However, it was to ensure they didn’t fall out while driving, so I can deal with it to avoid any dangerous situations. Dishes, cooking pots/pans, utensils were provided, which was great.
My only real complaint was the height of the vehicle, because we had to operate at a crouch/bent over.
Return:
Returning the vehicle was a breeze, especially since we ended up staying at the Happy Camper camp site right there at the building! It was one of the better organized camp sites we were at on our vacation. However, we found out that there was a discount code which we hadn’t known about since it was inside the building. It ended up being 600isk, but that’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Returning the vehicle with Helena was just as easy as our pick up! All we had to do was pull our stuff out and that was it! Helena also shuttled us back to the airport, which was great.
Summary:
Google lost my review on initial writing, and I took the time to write this a second time. If that doesn’t speak to how great Happy Campers is, I don’t know what does!
It was great to be able to focus on what mattered most, which was our experience in Iceland. Happy Campers, and the van itself, made that extremely easy to do. It was a very, very convenient experience from start to finish.
