Yes, you can run AI competitor analysis on more than your own social media account. You can track hashtags, mentions, and/or keywords for a competitor as well.
Once that data is flowing into EmbedSocial, point Claude or ChatGPT at it through EmbedSocial’s MCP. Ask for a share of voice comparison, a sentiment gap, or a trend report.
Most teams never try this because they assume tracking is locked to their own brand. It isn’t, and that misunderstanding is costing marketers real insight.
Right now, most competitor research still happens by hand, but it doesn’t have to. You can be done with screenshots of rival Instagram profiles and hashtag feeds.
AI social listening fixes the speed problem, and tracking a competitor’s data fixes the blind spot. So, I walk you through both: setting up the tracking, then connecting the AI.
What “AI competitor analysis” actually means for social media
Typically, when you search for “AI competitor analysis”, most of what comes back is aimed at product teams and investors: market sizing, pricing intelligence, feature-gap spreadsheets.
While useful, it’s still the wrong data for you if you run social media or content for a brand.
Competitor social media analysis is a narrower, more practical job: figuring out what a competitor posts, how often, how people react, and what topics or hashtags they own.
Then, after you’ve collected that data, you ask Claude or ChatGPT to summarize, compare, or spot a pattern in it faster than you could by scrolling.
To get started, you need two things:
- A social listening source tracking the competitor’s hashtag, mention, or keyword.
- An AI assistant with a live connection to that data.
Below, I tell you how to do both, and when done right, AI-powered social listening gives you a standing setup you can question in plain English, not a static report you skim once a month.
That combination is also closer to what social listening AI should have meant from the start: a live conversation with your own tracked data, not a locked report template.
Below, I cover the three main steps included in the process.
Step 1: track a competitor’s hashtag, mention, or keyword
EmbedSocial’s Social Listening tool lets you add hashtags, brand mentions, and/or keywords as a tracked source, across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, YouTube, Threads, and LinkedIn.
Note: some sources still require some sub-source types to belong to your own brand (this includes Facebook and LinkedIn), which is an API limitation. EmbedSocial only handles official API-allowed data from these platforms.
Here’s the setup, straight from EmbedSocial’s Keywords, Hashtags and Mentions documentation:
- Tap “+ Add new source” after accessing the “Sources” menu.
- Under “Get started with social listening”, click “Connect sources”.
- Select the platform you want to track (check which listening types that platform supports).
- In “Source details”, choose what to track: Mentions (the account(s) to monitor), Keywords (comma-separated terms), or Hashtags (comma-separated tags).
- Click “Done”, then “Start listening” to begin collecting matching posts automatically.
A practical example: if you’re competing with another local service brand and they run every promotion under #theirbrandname, add that hashtag as a source the same way you’d add your own.
Want a fuller picture? Add their public handle as a source too and/or a keyword tied to their main product line. Remember, each one is a separate source that starts collecting the moment you turn it on.
Two things worth knowing before you set this up.
Note: Hashtag, mention, and keyword sources start on the Pro Plus plan, and each tracked term counts as one source against your plan’s source limit, with its own monthly media cap. So, check current plan details on the pricing page before you commit to a specific number of competitors.
Step 2: connect EmbedSocial’s MCP to Claude
Once your competitor’s hashtag, mention, and/or keyword is being tracked, it becomes part of the same account data EmbedSocial’s MCP can read.
Here’s how to connect it in Claude, using the steps from EmbedSocial’s Claude MCP connector documentation:
- Open Claude (web or app) and click the plus (+) icon in the chat box.
- Go to “Add connector” and then “Add custom connector.”
- Name it “EmbedSocial” and enter the remote MCP server URL:
https://embedsocial.com/admin/mcp - Click “Add.”
- Open your profile icon → Connectors, find EmbedSocial under “not connected,” and click “Connect” to authorize it and enable tool permissions.
- Start chatting. Claude can now pull the social posts, UGC, and reviews from any source you name in your EmbedSocial account, filter by date range or keyword, look up an individual post, and read widget analytics.
That last part is the important one for this use case.
“Any source you name” includes the competitor hashtag, mention, or keyword source you just set up. Claude has no special “competitor” button. It doesn’t need one. It reads whatever you’ve told EmbedSocial to track, which now includes your rival’s data alongside your own.
Step 3: connect EmbedSocial’s MCP to ChatGPT
If ChatGPT is your daily driver instead of (or alongside) Claude, the setup is nearly identical.
These steps come from EmbedSocial’s ChatGPT MCP connector documentation:
- In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Security and enable “Developer mode.” This has to be on before you can add a custom connector.
- Go to the Plugins section and click the plus (+) button to add a custom plugin.
- Enter “EmbedSocial” as the name and use the same MCP server URL:
https://embedsocial.com/admin/mcp - Sign in with your EmbedSocial account credentials to authorize the connection and enable tool permissions.
- Start chatting. ChatGPT can now retrieve social posts, UGC, and reviews from a named source, filter by keyword, look up individual posts or reviews, pull widget engagement analytics, and generate reports, recaps, or drafts from what it finds.

Same underlying mechanic as Claude: ChatGPT reads the same data you can already see in your EmbedSocial account, including any competitor hashtag, mention, or keyword source you’ve added.
Note: You don’t need both Claude and ChatGPT connected. Pick whichever one your team already uses daily. The workflow from here is identical either way.
AI competitor analysis prompts you can use right now
This is the part that turns tracked data into an actual competitor analysis.
Once your AI assistant is connected, here are working prompts to run against a competitor’s tracked hashtag, mention, or keyword source:
Share of voice comparison
Pull this month’s posts from [your hashtag] and [competitor’s hashtag]. Compare total volume, engagement, and which one is growing faster.
Sentiment gap
Summarize the tone of posts mentioning [competitor name] over the last 30 days. Are people mostly positive, negative, or neutral, and what specific complaints or praise come up most?
Posting cadence and timing
Looking at the tracked posts under [competitor’s hashtag], what days and times do they post most, and does engagement follow a pattern?
Trend and topic discovery
What topics or themes show up repeatedly in posts under [competitor’s hashtag] this quarter that don’t show up in ours?
Content-gap spotting
Compare the content types (photos, video, UGC, replies) in our tracked source against theirs. What are they doing that we aren’t?
None of these prompts require a special “competitor” feature inside the MCP itself.
Here, you’re writing the competitor analysis AI prompt yourself.
That means you can ask a follow-up question the moment the first answer raises one, instead of waiting for next month’s automated report.

What you can track, platform by platform
EmbedSocial’s Social Listening currently covers Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, YouTube, Threads, and LinkedIn. However, as mentioned above, the tracking types vary by platform depending on the specific API limitations of said platform.
When you add a source in the dashboard, the platform picker shows exactly which listening types that network supports at the time.
For instance, when it comes to X social listening, you can track every type of competitor content, including hashtags, mentions, and keywords. But, when it comes to Instagram, you are unable to track the mentions of a particular third-party competitor, but you can still track hashtags and public posts.
Here’s how the different sub-source types are useful to you:
| What you’re tracking | Where it’s useful for competitor analysis |
|---|---|
| A competitor’s branded hashtag | Campaign reach, UGC volume, share of voice |
| Mentions of a competitor’s handle or name | Sentiment, complaints, praise, unprompted comparisons |
| A keyword tied to a competitor’s product or campaign | Category-level trend spotting, not just brand-level |
Limits and honest caveats
Worth saying plainly, since a “definitive guide” that oversells itself is worse than useless: this isn’t a magic competitor-spying tool.
- It only sees what you’ve told it to track. If you haven’t added a source for a competitor, no AI prompt will conjure that data out of nowhere.
- The MCP is read-only. It surfaces the data already sitting in your EmbedSocial account. It doesn’t scrape anything new on its own, and it doesn’t bypass a platform’s own visibility rules (a private account stays private).
- Analysis quality depends on your prompt. An AI agent for social media monitoring is still a language model reasoning over the data you hand it. Vague prompts get vague answers; specific ones get useful ones.
- Plan and volume limits apply. Hashtag, mention, and keyword sources require the Pro Plus plan, and each source has its own monthly media cap.
Conclusion: Start tracking a competitor’s hashtag, mention, or keyword today!
Add the source in Social Listening. Point your AI assistant at it. Ask a real question instead of scrolling for one. Then connect it to Claude or ChatGPT through EmbedSocial’s MCP.
If you’re already tracking your own brand, extending this to a competitor takes minutes, not a new tool.
